the first recipe I made was from a book called "Basic Soap Making" it was:

    1oz Castor oil
    7oz coconut oil
    6oz oliv oil
    5oz distilled water
    2oz lye.

I was too scared to try to convert it into grams! the soap turned out ok... nothing flash but it worked!

    My first recipe was:

    460g Olive
    440g Coconut
    300g Rice Bran
    300g Grapeseed

Disgusting recipe and it went rancid eventually. Plus I forgot to grease the mould and had to dig and cut it out. tongue

I just realised I never came back and posted my own first recipe. it was:

    10% Avocado Oil
    30% Coconut Oil
    40% Olive Oil
    20% Rice Bran Oil

The Avocado Oil gave it a lovely green tint, but that seems to have mostly faded now (yep, still have a couple of bars of it). I hadn't bought a stick blender yet, and I remember standing there for about 35 minutes stirring with the spatula until I gave up and decided it wasn't going to get to a thicker trace any time soon and just chucked it in the mould.

My first soap base was taken from a book I stumbled upon from a book store. Handmade Soap by Tatyana Hill.
I read this book about dozen times before I picked up the courage to start handling lye.
But it took me through the process and took the mystery out of it for me.
No stopping after that just wanted to keep experimenting.

ahhh.. soapcalc is such a great tool! I have to have a little chuckle at the story of your first batch, although I'm sure you weren't laughing at the time. You recovered well though, now that I've seen the photos of your second batch!
