    Spa Salt Bars Recipe

Post by Missnatty on Mon Sep 27, 2010 7:51 am

Anyone want to chat Salt bars??
I di my first the other week as u know.
    I just loved this soap.
Its about the only one I'm reaching for ATM.
Even been usung it on my face!! My skin loves it & has never looked clearer.
    Clearly its the salt.
I'm a big believer in salt water for healing the skin.
The ocean is the obvious choice but we live in the country.
    The recipe I used was....

    90% coconut
    10% castor
    Eucalyptus & Teetree EO.
    Superfatted at 15%
    400grams total oil
    400grams cooking salt.

I love this soap & it a classic recipe for a Salt Bar BUT!!....
I did find it just slightly drying compared to other soaps I've made & used.
Has anyone used a regular soap recipe to make these bars?
Was thinking of adding cocoa butter or something.
Perhaps even just using my basic soap recipe.
    Any thoughts?
    Or a recipe to share.......

I have made salt bars using 80% of salt to my oil weight. I like 85% CO/ 10% SB/ 5% castor although I do find these to attract water from the air during humid weather. I just store them wrapped in a clean tea towel in a cardboard box and they were fine.

I have tried a salt bar from another soaper from the US who used his regular moisturising recipe with the salt added and it didn't lather really, just produced a light lotion effect. My skin did feel lovely after using it though. Salt kills lather - just try lathering regular soap in some! Luckily coconut oil makes amazing lather Smile

Oh course...didn't think about that. That's why they make soap for using in salt water (ocean) which is 100%coconut.
Might try one with cocoa butter added. Maybe just 10%.
    so maybe something like...
    80% coconut
    10% castor
    10% cocoa
    see how that goes.

Ally - I used cooking salt. My recipe was happy to take equal weight to oil.
I thought it was going to be rough exfoliant bar but it wasn't at all. It was smooth & lovely & I felt amazingly clean. WHITE looking...laugh...I have english looking skin!!

I use 100% coconut oil. Reason for using all (or mostly) coconut oil is that salt cuts the lather. I use rock salt. Surprisingly, it's not scratchy at all.

I made another salt soap the other day with the cocoa butter. I wanted to just see if there would be a difference in the soap.
    I found that
    a) the cocoa butter just didn't make any difference to how the soap felt on my skin
    b)there were sigificent less bubbles

So I think I'll stick with the original recipe of 100% coconut like u say Bubbles. I really wanted to be able to see for myself the difference.
Both are still good usuable soap but the one with added oils just doesn't bubble as good.
Funny how u say u use the rock salt. I sent hubby off to the shop for me the other week to get me salt for soap & he came home with rocksalt..... I growled & threw it in the cupboard. I honestly thought the rocksalt would be horribly scratchy.

Hmmm, I think your hubby needs lots of kisses for being clever and bringing home rock salt. It goes really smooth, like a river pebble. I only use 50% salt by the way. Just as a matter of interest, when I use rain water from my tank to make coconut soap, the soap ends up pink. How cool is that? Laughing

Will try the rock salt ( & give lots of kisses, to Hubby, not the soap of course...lol). Will try just 50% rock salt like u say.
    Interesting about the pink.
I use rainwater (we have poly) & never had that happen but I've never done a true 100% coconut.
I'll have to try it & see if my water goes pink....fun.
I was reading a thread on another forum about 100% coconut & the poster said how wonderful the soap wouldbe after a long cure.
So keen to make a batch to put away.
Am wondering now if that was u Bubbles?? Laugh if it was.
I get very intimadated over at SMF. Feel like a piece of sand at the beach...LOL

Must say on the topic of salt bars..... they're up there as one of my favs.
